GEO in one sentence
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of getting large language models to mention and cite your brand when they generate answers for your buyers. Where SEO optimizes for a ranking, GEO optimizes for a recommendation. The term comes from an academic paper, not a marketing agency: Generative Engine Optimization by Aggarwal and colleagues from Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi, presented at KDD 2024, which means its foundational claims were tested on 10,000 queries before anyone tried to sell you a tool.
Search is splitting in two
For two decades, being found online meant ranking on Google. That era is ending faster than most marketing plans assume. According to Pew Research Center's Americans and AI survey (5,119 adults, published June 2026), 49% of US adults now use AI chatbots, up from 33% in 2024, and among those users the single most common activity is searching for information, cited by 42%.
OpenAI reported 800 million weekly active ChatGPT users at DevDay in October 2025. When buyers ask an assistant instead of typing a query, the assistant does not show ten blue links. It gives one answer and cites a handful of sources, and GEO is the discipline of making sure your brand is part of that answer.

GEO, AEO and SEO in one minute
SEO earns rankings in classic search results. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) aims to make you the extracted answer in surfaces like Google AI Overviews. GEO gets you cited inside generated answers from assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. In practice the three overlap heavily: Google itself says its generative features are rooted in its core ranking systems, so strong SEO remains the foundation the other two build on.
What the research actually found
The Princeton team built a benchmark of 10,000 queries and tested nine optimization methods against simulated generative engines. The results are specific.
Adding quotations from relevant sources improved visibility by roughly 41%. Adding statistics improved it by about 33%, and citing sources by about 30%. Fluency improvements added around 27%. And the classic dark art of SEO, keyword stuffing, actually reduced visibility by about 9%.
The most interesting finding is what the authors call the underdog effect: sites ranked fifth in the underlying search results gained up to 115% visibility from citing sources, while already dominant sites saw little benefit or even losses. Generative engines reward evidence density, not authority alone. One honest caveat: the paper tested simulated engines built on GPT models, not production ChatGPT or Perplexity, so treat the exact percentages as directional.
How generative engines decide who to cite
Modern assistants do not answer from memory alone. They run retrieval augmented generation: the engine searches an index in real time, reranks the retrieved passages, and synthesizes an answer constrained to cite that evidence. So the work splits in two: first be retrievable, then be quotable. Retrievability is plumbing.
OpenAI operates three separate crawlers, and the distinction matters: GPTBot collects training data, OAI-SearchBot powers ChatGPT search citations, and ChatGPT-User performs live fetches when a user asks about your page. Blocking GPTBot in robots.txt does not remove you from ChatGPT search; blocking OAI-SearchBot does.
ChatGPT search has historically leaned on Bing's index, so being properly indexed in Bing Webmaster Tools is a real prerequisite. Perplexity crawls the web with its own bot into a deliberately smaller, quality focused index. Gemini and AI Overviews are grounded in Google Search itself.
Each engine has its own citation diet
Ahrefs analyzed millions of AI answers with Brand Radar in June 2025 and found the engines cite very different webs. ChatGPT's most cited domain was Wikipedia at 16.3% of citations, followed by news outlets. Perplexity leaned on YouTube (16.1%) and Wikipedia (12.5%). Google AI Overviews favored community content: YouTube at 9.5%, Wikipedia at 8.4%, Reddit at 7.4% and Quora at 3.6%.
The implication is uncomfortable for brands that only invest in their own domain: a meaningful share of AI visibility is earned on platforms you do not control, through presence in the places each engine already trusts.
Why bother, if AI referral traffic is still small
Skeptics point out that AI platforms drove only 0.32% of website traffic in 2026, per SE Ranking's study of 101,574 websites. True, and misleading. That share was 0.02% in 2024, a 16x increase in two years, and the composition matters more than the volume.
Semrush's clickstream research found the average AI search visitor converts at 4.4 times the rate of a traditional organic visitor, and SE Ranking measured 68% higher engagement time. People arrive predecided because the assistant already did the comparison for them.
Semrush projects AI search visits will overtake traditional organic visits in 2028. The case for GEO is not today's referral volume; it is being the default recommendation when the answer, not the list of links, is the product.
What moves the needle, ranked by evidence
- Quotable evidence on every important page: statistics, expert quotes and cited sources, the three strongest tactics in the KDD 2024 study
- Answer shaped content that states the conclusion up front, since engines cite passages, not pages
- Brand mentions across the open web: Ahrefs found branded mentions correlate 0.664 with AI Overview presence versus 0.218 for backlinks
- Presence where each engine looks: Wikipedia and news media for ChatGPT, YouTube and Reddit for AI Overviews and Perplexity
- Crawler access and Bing indexation: allow OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User and PerplexityBot, and verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools
What does not work
Two popular ideas deserve a warning label. First, llms.txt: the proposed standard for guiding AI crawlers is cheap to add but, as of today, ignored. Google's John Mueller stated in June 2025 that no AI system currently uses it, and no major provider has committed to it.
Second, recycled predictions: the widely quoted Gartner forecast that search volume would fall 25% by 2026 was scenario modeling, and mid 2026 data shows it did not materialize. Search is being transformed, not replaced. Anyone selling GEO with that stat as the headline is optimizing for your fear, not your visibility.
Where to start
Write down the ten questions your best customers ask before they buy. Ask them, phrased naturally, in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini once a month, and log who gets mentioned and cited. That manual share of voice audit costs an hour and tells you exactly where you stand.
Then work the evidence: make each of those ten answers exist on your site with a citable statistic, a named source and a clear conclusion in the first paragraph.
